My name is Leigh Anne Marshall and I LOVE to cook. I always have, but life just always seemed to get in the way. Then, in 2015, I suffered a health crisis that ended with major surgery. That event changed my life and my perspective on food. I found out rather quickly that the diet I had eaten my whole life – the typical Western meat-and-potatoes diet – was no longer an option. I knew I had to make a change. I went vegan cold turkey and haven’t looked back.
The next big question after the change was, “What do I eat?” I had no idea. So, I read cookbooks and watched YouTube obsessively to figure it all out. What I discovered in that process was a world of food I had never known existed. It was so creative, fun and flavorful. And best of all, those foods were good for me, good for the animals that I love so much, and good for the planet Earth. It was a win-win in my mind. So, I dove in head first and spent nearly two years learning how to cook vegan foods that even my omnivore friends loved.
More and more, I was encouraged to start a business creating and selling crazy-good plant-based and vegan friendly meals, so I took the leap and my Houston-based service, Angel Food Kitchen, was born. I spent almost 3 years joyfully serving the Houston community until life threw me another curveball. I was presented with an opportunity to relocate to California and after much thought, I decided to take that next big leap.
A big life change calls for some new adventures and I decided to re-open my meal prep service, rebranding as The Plant Powered Chef, in Nevada City. I offer private chef services as well as catering for private events. In addition, I am offering a weekly supper club experience at the beautiful GratiDude Ranch where like-minded folks in our community can come together and enjoy plant powered food at Sissy’s Table, named after my Mom, Sissy. Thank you for being on this journey with us and we look forward to feeding your soul.
Meet the inspiration behind Sissy's Table. This is my Mom, LaJuan. But everyone called her Sissy.
As the story goes, her mother took so long to name her and her twin brother that the nursing staff took to calling them Sissy and Sonny. And, well, it stuck.
My Mom was an epic Southern home cook. Every morsel that would leave her kitchen was so good it would make your tongue slap your brain out. And every Saturday she and my aunt would get in the kitchen with their 7&7's and start cooking. The laughter and conversation floating out of that kitchen would fill our home with so much energy and joy.
And then would come the food. There would be piles of it -- more than we could eat. And it would cover our dining room table to the point that we barely had room for our plates.
Even though our family had modest means, somehow my mother always managed to make sure we were fed, and fed well. Sissy's Table was always overflowing. It was one of the ways she showed her love.
Sadly, Sissy passed away from cancer in 1998. Her loss was one of the hardest things I have ever had to endure. My Mom was my best friend.
I can think of no better way to honor her memory than to create a supper club experience where guests and friends can gather around Sissy's Table enjoying her recipes that I get to share, in my own creative plant powered way, based on her culinary creations --and doing my best to spread love through my food, the way she did.
I love you Mom. This is for you.
